Afrovenator abakensis It is the only known species of the extinct genus Afrovenator, megalosaurid theropod dinosaur, who lived in the middle of the Jurassic period, approximately 167 to 161 million years ago, in what is now Africa.
The generic name is made up of the Latin words afro-"Africa" venator "hunter". With only one named species, A. abakensis. The name refers to its predatory nature, and its location in Africa, specifically In Abaka, the Tuareg name for the region in Niger where the fossil was found.
