The priapulids of Priapus, a god of Greek mythology with a huge phallus, are a group of vermiform marine animals that live buried in sandy or muddy bottoms, where they dig galleries with their trunks.
All biologists believe that Cambrian animals were the ancestors of all living beings today. The first living beings on Earth were very simple and small single-celled prokaryotic organisms, like bacteria. They emerged about 3,800 to 3,500 million years ago. It was almost 600 million years ago when animal evolution experienced an unprecedented burst of creativity: the event known as the Cambrian Explosion. This explosion was characterized by the sudden appearance, over a period of around 40 million years, of complex multicellular macroscopic organisms during the Early Cambrian (541-518 m.y.).
The Early Cambrian fossil fauna of Chengjiang, discovered in 1984 about 52 km southeast of Kunming in southern China, is matched only by the Middle Cambrian fauna of the Burgess Shale (British Columbia) in its excellent state of preservation.
