Zamites was a gymnosperm (it lacks fruit because it does not have an ovary) that belonged to the cycads, which by their configuration are reminiscent of palms: their robust and generally unbranched, often short trunk, has a tuft of large leaves at the apex, fern-fronted, helically arranged.
