The elk is a species of artiodactyl mammal in the family Cervidae. It is a typical inhabitant of Nordic forests around the world.
The largest deer ever found, Cervalces latifrons, also known as broad-fronted elk, lived in the swamps of Eurasia. It has various adaptations to cold environments, one of the main ones being a large nose with a large flow of blood that warms the air before it reaches its lungs.
