Amber is a precious stone made of fossilized plant resin coming mainly from the remains of conifers and some angiosperms. Etymologically its name comes from Arabic, meaning what floats in the sea.
Trees produce resin as a protection against disease and insect infestation, when the bark of a tree is injured due to splitting or attack by wood beetles or other insects, bacteria or fungi. After exuding to the outside, the resin hardens by polymerization inside clay or sandy rocks, sometimes limestone, which were formed in deltaic areas of rivers, generally with a lot of associated organic matter, and have been preserved inside for millions of years.
Amber is a fossil remains, since it is an organic substance and its structure is not defined and in Europe, amber is formed from the resin of the Pinus succinifera.
This piece contains a Angiosperm flower and two flies, one of them belongs to the family Sciaridae and another to the family Dolichopodidae or long-legged fly.
