Claw from one of the fingers of the pterosaur wing.

Pterosaurs (Pterosauria, from the Greek for "winged lizards") are an extinct order of flying sauropsids that existed during almost the entire Mesozoic era (228 to 66 million years ago).

They were the first vertebrates to conquer the air.

Its body was covered in feathers.

They had specialized forelimbs with four fingers:

  • three small, mobile fingers ending in claws, ideal for climbing or clinging to surfaces.
  • hypertrophied, extremely elongated fourth finger that supported the wing membrane (patagium) for flight. This membrane extended from the finger to the body and, frequently, to the hind limbs. This structure is key to their ability to fly and posture.

The lower limbs or hind legs were long, designed primarily for quadrupedal walking. They generally had four functional fingers (varied phalangeal formula), equipped with claws for grasping. They walked on flat feet (plantigrade) or on toes (digitigrade), and were often connected by an alar membrane (uropatagium).

Pterosaurs are not dinosaurs, although they did coexist with them for tens of millions of years.
