Lunar Meteorite: Adrar 013

The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Timokten, Algeria.

Melt breccia composed of grayish-greenish clasts embedded in a matrix of molten rock rich in anorthite, which presents pronounced flow and temper textures, with small acicular crystals that nucleate on larger entrained mineral grains. The main phases are pigeonite, frequently zoned augite and, in lesser quantities, olivine. Minor phases include ilmenite, chromite and troilite.

Lunar meteorites are rocks found on Earth having been ejected from the Moon by the impact on its surface of an asteroidal meteorite or possibly a comet. They remain in space for a long time, but sometimes they cross Earth's orbit and end up crashing, even after millions of years.
These meteorites are known to be from the Moon because lunar rocks were collected and brought to Earth on the Apollo missions.

Lunar meteorites are the only rocks from the Moon that can be legally sold or bought from an individual.

All rocks obtained in the Apollo missions are considered the property of Humanity and for the benefit of Science, therefore, their private possession is illegal, in addition to their sale and purchase. The small samples of lunar rocks obtained by the Russian Luna 16 probe are also not available to the general public.
