Sparus is a genus of perciformes (perch-shaped) fish belonging to the family Sparidae. They have a very laterally compressed body, a dorsal fin with spines, a low-cut caudal fin, and well-developed ctenoid scales (a scale found in teleost fish, characterized by having toothed or comb-shaped edges, which gives them a rough texture).

They are omnivores and live on the coast, among the stones or meadows of Posidonia.

They are hermaphrodites with alternating sex throughout their lives, so that in some species they are first female and after a few years they become males and in other species of sparids they are first males and end up as females.
