A study of the diversity and distribution during the Cenozoic of the genus Terebralia indicates that it is a gastropod associated with mangroves and marshes in Europe, which makes it a reliable indicator of these environments in the fossil record (Middle Eocene - Miocene). The Messinian salinity crisis and climate change precipitated the disappearance of mangroves on the Mediterranean coast, marking the end of Terebralia's presence in this region.
