Hexactinellids (Hexactinellida) are a class of the phylum Porifera. They are commonly known as vitreous sponges and its mineral skeleton is composed of siliceous spicules with six rays that intersect at right angles, known as hexactins, which gives its name to the group.
In addition to the spicules, it may present spongin fibers. Spongin fibers are protein filaments, derived from collagen, that form the fibrous and flexible skeleton of sponges.
