Walchia was one of the first conifers. Conifers are gymnosperms, the name comes from the Greek γυμνός 'naked', and σπέρμα 'seed'; that is, 'naked seed'. This term is applied because the seeds of these plants are not formed in an ovary, but are naked.
Fertilization in angiosperm plants transforms the flower parts into the fruit and seeds:
- seed: originates from the fertilized egg inside the ovary.
- fruit: originates from the ovary. Although the ovary is the main part, the fruit may also include the calyx and other parts of the flower.
