Onchopristis is an extinct genus of giant sawfish that lived during the Late Cretaceous, it belongs to the order rhinopristiiformes, which are rays, cartilaginous fish related to sharks, which includes paddlefish rays and related groups. Onchopristis had an elongated shovel-shaped snout lined on both sides with barbed, hook-shaped teeth. It was very large, measuring about 10 meters in length when fully developed. Onchopristis's eyes were located on the top of its head. head, to be able to locate its predators rather than its prey, while its mouth and gills were located in the lower part of its body. The females would probably be larger than the males, and would weigh between 1 – 1.5 tons. The rostrum and snout measured about 3 meters long, with hook-like teeth. In the type species, O. numidus, each tooth had a beard, while in O. dunklei there were two or five on each tooth. The face most likely must have possessed electroreceptors, to be able to detect its food underwater like modern sharks. Onchopristis may have raked riverbeds to find and then devour prey.
